Don’t Just Take Our Word For It

Hear from the ones who’ve carried the unseen war and found something useful in these pages.
I’ve never been the type to read self-help books. But this one got me. It didn’t talk down to me or try to sound fancy. It just explained why my body still acts like I’m on patrol even when I’m home watching TV. That alone was worth it. The breathing stuff actually helps.

Finally, someone who gets it. The part about running toward wreckage while everyone else runs away… that hit hard. I always thought I was just burned out or weak. Turns out my nervous system was just stuck. The tools in here are simple enough to use between codes. I actually slept better after reading.

I picked this up because my therapist recommended it. I was scared it would be too triggering. But the author writes like someone who actually listens. The part about home becoming the war zone… I felt seen. The grounding exercises are small, but they work when I feel that old panic coming back.

I’ve been out for nine years and still couldn’t sit with my back to a door. This book didn’t try to fix me. It just explained why I am the way I am. The chapter on moral injury made me cry because someone finally put words to the guilt I’ve been carrying. I’m not healed, but I feel less alone.

I bought this for myself, but ended up passing it around the station. The chapter on brotherhood and sisterhood should be required reading. We’re good at joking around but terrible at real check-ins. This book gave me actual words to use when I know a guy is struggling but won’t admit it.

Working inside changes you. I didn’t realize how much until I read the chapter about sitting with your back to the wall, even at family dinners. The author doesn’t pretend that the job isn’t brutal. He just gives you ways to not let it eat you alive. I’ve already started using the doorway reset trick.
